Judas would be proud. Meet Ben Nelson, soon to be ex-senator from Nebraska:
Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.), the final Democratic holdout on health care, announced to his caucus Saturday morning that he would support the Senate reform bill, clearing the way for final passage by Christmas.
“We’re there,” said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), as he headed into a special meeting to outline the deal.
Democratic leaders spent days trying to hammer out a deal with Nelson, and worked late Friday night with him on abortion coverage language that had proved the major stumbling block. Nelson also secured other favors for his home state.
They didn’t “work with him” on abortion, he caved on it based on those “other favors” he secured. To wit:
Nelson has recently complained that the proposed expansion of Medicaid to those earning below 133% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) would burden his state of Nebraska and suggested that states should be able to opt-in to the program.
Under the current merged legislation (the version unveiled on November 18th), the federal government fully finances care for the expanded population for two years and increases its matching funds (known as FMAP) thereafter. Page 98 of the managers amendment specifically identifies Nebraska for higher federal matching funds, fully funding its expansion for an additional year…
That’s probably worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Nebraska, representing the modern-day equivalent of 30 pieces of silver to turn your back on the citizens of Nebraska and, indeed, America as a whole. To borrow a favored Obama phrase, let me be clear: The American people do NOT want this bill. The oft-repeated assertion that everyone is clamoring for ObamaCare is laughable and a lie. The more people hear about it, the less they want it and yes, the more they prefer the status quo. And yet, Reid is insisting on shoving this down our throats and plans a vote before Christmas…when he still hasn’t released the final Senate bill!!!
When premiums skyrocket as a result of this monstrosity, when the deficit balloons further and healthcare costs continue to soar as the quality of care decreases, be sure to remember who is to blame and the f’ed up process they used to make it happen. Ample time for debate? Transparency? Bipartisanship? Just words. President Wonderful and his merry band of congressional socialists may talk the good talk, but the real goal here is enslaving more to the federal government and, by extension, the Democrat Party. Make no mistake about it.

I thought that Lieberman was blocking the cloture vote, anyway, so how are they getting 60? I’m a bit confused as to how they can get cloture on this.

Liebs was planning to join the GOP in blocking cloture as long as the public option or Medicare buy-in remained. Since both have been chucked, he has said he’ll vote for cloture. Nelson was the lone Dem holdout until yesterday.

Help me and my simple mind here please.
You effectively say above that a politician’s vote for health care reform equals betraying Jesus Christ in the same way as did Judas. For thirty pieces of silver?
I can only imagine how you would squall if I ever came close to writing what you have written. And I haven’t. I’ve pointed out that one cannot righteously lie and you took exception with me for having made such a claim.
You obviously will say whatever is necessary to gain the political advantage you wish to achieve…
Your lack of shame seemingly knows no bounds.

It is a fairly common rhetorical device to compare a traitor-which is what he is to the people of NE, at the very least-to the likes of Judas, or Benedict Arnold. I haven’t done so, but I bet if I looked I’d find similar analogies made regarding Joe Lieberman on Lefty blogs.
I’d be careful, too, about pointing the finger at me whining about saying whatever is necessary to gain a political advantage. Right now in DC YOUR Democrat Party is doing and saying whatever they have to to push an increasingly unpopular bill upon us. Payoffs to certain key senators to win votes, alleged threats to close down military bases in their states if they don’t go along with it, fearmongering with laughable assertions that we’ll go bankrupt if it doesn’t pass. That’s nothing but a damnable lie. Your President also threatened a liberal House rep by saying “Don’t think we’re not keeping score, brother”. THIS is Change We Can Believe In? This is the new era of governing everyone was promised last November?
I would add, too, that it was claimed on this very blog that you yourself employ certain metaphors at times. To wit: Rockingham County Democratic Chairman, Lowell Fulk, calls for violence saying, “If they get in your way, make it hurt, then they’ll think twice about getting in your way next time.” Deb SF said it was nothing more than a football metaphor? Uh huh. Sounds more like the Chicago Way, or the Obama/Rahm/Axelrod style, to me.

He got ya, Lowell…everything he said makes sense.
That “football metaphor” is indeed a metaphor…for playing “do whatever it takes at whatever cost, no matter the will of the people” politics.

Wasn’t it Fulk who was quoted as saying,”“Let’s enjoy knocking their soft teeth down their whiny throats”?

Actually Tom, while I can understand your confusion, that was George Allen some years ago referring to Democrats.
I’m the one who several years later said, “You’d better bring your lunch…”

Re: 4, “I would add, too, that it was claimed on this very blog”
I don’t think I would add the “claims” of this blog to scripture just quite yet… Though if God is speaking to you personally, you probably should listen… Above my pay grade…
