There are more ways to keep connected socially than ever before, mostly useful, interesting, funny and satisfying. The other side are those time-wasting phone conversations, endless email chain letters, silly FB status updates, and IIRC, even people stopping by your house, barging in through your kitchen door without even knocking.
Facebook kind of reminds me of those telephonic party lines back before single-service lines became more or less universal in the ’70’s, annoying some and amusing others. I’m in the mostly amused camp for FB. My family didn’t have a party line, even back in the late 50’s when I was very young, but my grandmother did, deep in upstate PA coal country.
Remember this?
Mind Your Own Business — Hank Williams Sr. — 1949
Oh, the woman on our party line’s the nosiest thing
She picks up her receiver when she knows it’s my ring
Why don’t you mind your own business
(Mind your own business)
Well, if you mind your business, then you won’t be mindin’ mine.
