Here’s your chance. Tell me why one would want to vote for Obama. Also I you think there are any reasons I would want to vote for him, fire away.
Comments left on this thread attacking people for their reasons will be heavily edited. I want any Obama supporters out there to leave their honest opinions. I may later start a thread to discuss some of the reasons given, but for now I really want to know what qualities people see in Obama that make them want to vote for him. Answers like, “He’s not McCain.” will also be heavily edited. I want to know about Obama.

1. He supports a woman’s right to abortion, even if the abortee temporarily is born alive. Keep abortion safe and legal baby!
2. He would appoint liberal justices and judges to the court who would legislate from the judge, so even if our elected officials passed laws that we liberals don’t like, the judges would overturn them.
3. The country wouldn’t elect Teddy Kennedy or some other ultra-liberal for president, but since Obama has so little experience, and has avoided all the tough votes, he has no record, so the country doesn’t know how liberal he is. So, if you love Teddy Kennedy, you’ll love Obama!
4. He’s part black, so look at this as an affirmative action election. We can then all feel better about ourselves for electing the first black president, even if he’s not all black, or even black African American as the term is generally understood. Vote for Barry, eliminate all that white guilt. You KNOW you have it.
5. He’ll raise taxes. You know you want higher taxes. You know Washington knows more what is best for you and your family than you do!
6. He’s not GWB, he’s not GWB, HE’S NOTTTT GWB!
7. He’s got experience as a lecturer on Constitutional Law! He’s got experience [2 years] as a U.S. Senator! He was a community organizer! He’s perfectly qualified!
8. He’ll bring “CHANGE” [insert your utopian view of what we should change about America here, just don't ask him what he means by "change"] to America.
9. Finally, The Oceans Will Stop Rising. He will Turn Back Global Warming. The Rest Of The World Will LOVE Us Again. Peace will break out spontaneously around the world. We will have an un-broken chaing spanning the world and we will all sing KUMBAYAH, or some other non-sectarian similarity. CAN’T YOU SEE IT? WORLD PEACE! FREE LOVE!
You shouldn’t vote for Obama.
If you want to vote for someone who matches your values and beliefs (at least as I intuit them from your writings on DWJ, Rep and here), you should vote for Bob Barr, with his emphasis on personal responsibility, choice and individual liberty.
If you’re anti-Obama enough, vote for divided government and John McCain. All indications are towards a strong Dem majority in the senate and house, so a Rep in the White House keeps everything stuck in neutral, especially if dems don’t hit 60 in the senate. Neither side will let the other make significant, path-breaking changes along the lines of FDR’s New Deal in the 30’s, or the LBJ’s Great Society legislation of the 60’s- medicare/medicaid, and education spending. Any changes will be at the margin.
Or you could write in Myron.
Umm, well, the fact that he supports abortion….is a big fat NO vote for me.
To my understanding McCain is a “whatever I feel at the moment” for abortion. So I dont have anyone to vote for
Guess Who…great post. Sure you’re not a contributor to Crocktown??
Wildkids, McCain is pro-life, and that’s one of the few things he’s been fairly consistent with. The problem is when you’re a so-called maverick (read: liberal) on a lot of other stuff, people wonder if you’ll start changing your mind or moving Left on other things, like abortion. The fact he’s been toying with the idea of a pro-choice VP doesn’t help that perception, either, but the bottom line is he does have a good pro-life record.
And I liked Guess Who’s post too…
or better yet vote for the Dems and make DebSF and her party happy, they need another vacation. I hear Martha’s Vineyard is nice in February. Maybe they can be invited to go for a car ride.
Darn it! Can’t anyone actually follow directions and tell me why you support Obama?
Now I feel like I should erase all those comments, since that is not what this post was for.
If you can’t give me a reason to vote for Obama could you at least tell me why you plan to?
Hehe…I could tell you what I’ve heard Obama supporters say as to why they’re voting for him, but that wouldn’t be in the spirit of the post either.
Well, if no one is going to take me up on the offer to explain why they support Obama, then I would like to hear what you have heard.
I hear crickets….
It hasn’t even been a full day yet. Have a little patience.
1)They agree with him on policy…he’s a liberal, they’re liberal, so there’s common ground there.
2)He’s smart, young, hip, and in tune with a different generation of Americans than McCain.
3)He’ll bring a different perspective to the office than those before him, given his background and yes, race.
4)(This has been mentioned on these boards) He’ll improve America’s image abroad.
5)McCain=Bush, and we can’t have 4 more years of that.
That’s about it…Hopefully others have more to add.
I have also heard the “He’s so cool reason”. It’s been mentioned several times on a homeschool board I visit. Usually when referring to children or nieces or nephews that are looking forward to voting for the first time. Sadly, they are just voting for an image and rarely can give a reason other than he is cool.
I have also been told by an Obama supporter that they like him because he inspires people.
Regarding your #1. I would like to know which issues exactly his supporters agree with him on.
Ms. etter, just teasin…I know people work hard when they are at work and then have a family to take care of. I also don’t need reasons, people do what they do because it is sometimes what makes them happy and they believe it can make a difference. If no one wants to share that is fine.
Thanks for the much nicer area to share thoughts though…honestly.
I hate to speak for them-again-but from what I gather they agree with him on Iraq, abortion, universal healthcare, taking money from oil companies and/or the wealthy, and so forth.
However, I personally think the ideological common ground is secondary to most of his supporters. Instead, they’re focusing, like you said, on the image; he represents a new era of leadership to them, regardless of the fact a lot of his “ideas” are the same old liberal ones, just recycled and presented in a different fashion.
Thanks RF.
Sorry, Whackette. LOL, I like to post on here, but I have no reason to vote for him. LOL.
Why the big hold up on the damn VP decision…I guess he misses his tele-tubbie-prompter…again
I’m wondering the same thing. Its pretty dumb to wait till Saturday morning, when not many will be paying attention, to announce something like that.
The text strategy was two-fold; a) focus attention on the VP pick and hold off on the pick as long as possible and b) generate free, from the voter themselves, a huge data base of accurate cell phone numbers for a GOTV initiative on election day.
Clearly a) happened, though you can argue that after a pretty much flawless execution they bobbled the landing a bit - texting Friday afternoon during the work day would have been better. Sending the secret service to Biden’s house kind of is confirms the pick, and forced the campaign’s hand.
But now they have a gigantic free database of cell numbers to use on Nov. 4.
But why hold off for as long as possible? They bungled it, alright, and sending out a text at 3am is usually a big no no.
They should’ve announced Thursday evening, intime for the evening newscasts, the Friday morning shows, then no doubt more coverage on the Friday evening stuff, then more on Saturday when he’s formally introduced in IL. Instead they wait till late Friday night/Saturday morning when not as many will be paying attention. Dumb…
RF ~ your scenario would require THOUGHT!
