Fake names were used to caption a picture in a California school’s year book. This was an extremely rude thing to do no matter what false names were used. I hope the school can track down the person responsible and see to it that an apology is issued.

The fake names are being described as “ghetto names”. What makes a name a ghetto name? What does that say to people who were actually given one of these names by their parents when they hear their name being referred to in such a derogatory way? Am I the only one that thinks someone should be staging a protest over this blatant display of racism?

UPDATE: It has been pointed out that “ghetto names” didn’t appear in the article I linked to. Here is a link to that quote if you want to see it in print. If you watch the video in the first link another student refers to the names saying, “they were very ghetto”.

  1. I would hardly call this racism. A practical joke yes, but not racism. I honestly think the school has better things to do with it’s time and resources than trying to find someone who played a joke.

On the otherhand, if the situation were reversed and it was “honkey/redneck” names that were found, would there be as much crying and moaning? I think not.

There were other pictures (of whites) mislabeled as well. It’s not like one group was singled out. What I find questionable is the students calling the false names “Ghetto names”.

To me that is much more insulting and maybe racist than the misprints. There are people making a big deal about the students having the wrong name assigned to them, like it is an insult that those particular names were used. I think it is a huge insult to suggest that those names are derogatory in some way especially since some children are given those names.

If you are named any of these name, you have a ghetto name–whatever that is.
