… I went to The Official Website for the City of Richmond, Virginia. Only it wasn’t all that fun. And it isn’t properly named; it should be called The Official Website for the Shameless Self Promotion of the Mayor of Richmond, Virginia.

He has his picture* in the header. A link to a video heralding his accomplishments is prominently displayed right next to an invitation to visit his website. Under current headlines the Mayor is mentioned in five out of the six titles. And all six of the headline articles have his name in them. Really, in a city as big as Richmond is he the only thing happening?

*and it’s even labeled lest you don’t recognize him

UPDATE: Yep, I just confirmed that the capitol of Virginia has the most narcissistic Mayor compared to the capitols of all the other states. (At least judging by the city websites) And just look what if left if the Mayor of Richmond is removed from the city’s site. Not much

  1. It doesn’t look too bad to me–at first I thought it was a little silly but it seems like a webpage with a primarily government (rather than tourism, etc) function. There’s what look like press releases in the center and constituent services on the side. Granted, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of activities/city news outside what the government is doing, but it doesn’t seem lacking either. It’s not a newspaper or a tourist group, and the richmond newspapers I had access to when I was there for 3 weeks weren’t much better–at least this has services provided for people.

  2. The older I get the more I think that everything is political.

    I just updated the post.

The mayor’s facetime is excessive compared to the sites for other capitol cities. Quite a few sites had either a picture of their mayor or a message, but nothing near what Richmond has. Whenever possible I found a site that focused mostly on government rather than tourism. Apples to apples as much as possible.

Not that there is really a point to this.

  4. That makes more sense. Though to me it still sounds like they don’t have much talent in their press department if everything comes back to him. And a lot of that could be politics as well–if someone in the mayor’s office maintains the site, then of course they’ll write it that way and not see any issue with it.
Also, I’m used to seeing this because I’m working for Congress and that’s how we’re supposed to do things here–a little different though, since we’re supposed to be about politics.
